Weymouth Olympics marina plans lodged

Natalie Martin 30/03/2007 13:00

The Olympic Delivery Authority has submitted plans to renovate the sailing facilities at Weymouth and Portland in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The plans to regenerate Osprey Quay and the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, which will host the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events during the games, were unveiled at an exhibition last month.

They include a new permanent slipway, more race-boat parking and lifting and mooring facilities.

Construction work is due to be completed by the end of 2008.

Dean & Reddyhoff, developers for the South West Regional Development Agency, also today submitted planning applications for a new 560-berth commercial marina at Osprey Quay, of which 250 berths will be used during the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The marina will include retail and industrial development.

Red Diesel - Derogation is not renewed

The Treasury Minister, John Healey, confirmed today that the European Commission has rejected the UK Government’s application to renew the UK’s derogation on red diesel for private recreational boaters.
"This decision is naturally very disappointing. Despite the best efforts of the campaign leaders, RYA and British Marine Federation (BMF), and the efforts of the UK Government, it appears that the Commission was intent on removing the derogation at any cost and has dismissed the consequences to the UK marine industry and the private recreational boater" says Neil Northmore, RYA Government Affairs Advisor.
"Boaters could face a substantial increase in the price of marine diesel" warned Howard Pridding BMF Executive Director, "which will have a huge adverse impact on the UK marine industry. It is profoundly disappointing that the EU has not listened to the UK Government".
The RYA and BMF welcomed the Minister’s acknowledgement of the problems that will flow from this decision, and has confirmed that the UK Government will consult with boating organisations to develop and implement a sensible timetable for transitional measures to alleviate the effects on the boater and the industry.
The RYA and BMF will continue to work closely with Government and their respective members to ensure that key issues of cost, availability and safety are addressed by the transitional measures.

Sunseeker has agreed outline terms with US-based Luhrs Marine for the purchase of its Legend Yacht manufacturing facilities at Osprey Quay, Portland.
The site will be acquired to accommodate Sunseeker’s planned expansion with a licence to use the facilities immediately, with production starting as soon as the purchase is complete, writes Iain Sutherland.

But coming hard on the heels of the Osprey Quay announcement Sunseeker's founder and managing director Robert Braithwaite stressed his firm's ongoing commitment to Poole - despite the decision to snap up the 11.5-acre Portland site for just under £7 million.

And a further 40 vacancies are likely to be created in Poole because some of its existing staff who used to work for Luhrs are likely to relocate back to Portland.

‘Osprey Quay is an ideal location for our future expansion plans,’ said Braithwaite, ‘we are particularly pleased that we can continue to build the business locally. I am sure that by moving a level of production to the Portland location we will be able to build on the company’s success whilst adding to the growth of the local economy and utilising the boatbuilding skills available
